Analysis of the match between PSV Eindhoven and FC Bayern München
Last weekend, Bayern Munich caused a major surprise after suffering a 1-2 defeat against Augsburg, an unexpected result for the team dominating the Bundesliga. However, this slip-up does not fundamentally shake the “Bavarians’” position in the 2025/26 Bundesliga title race, although it may slightly delay their early coronation.
At present, Bayern still maintain an 8-point gap over second-placed Dortmund. Returning to the Champions League, Vincent Kompany’s men will have the chance to prove that the loss to Augsburg was merely an accident when they face PSV in the final match of the 2025/26 league phase. Bayern are currently second in the standings with 18 points, three points behind leaders Arsenal.
Nevertheless, Bayern have already secured direct qualification to the Round of 16, and even if they lose to PSV, they will still finish in the Top 8. Therefore, the German giants can approach this match with a relatively relaxed mindset, and may even rotate their squad rather than field their strongest lineup.
On the other hand, PSV find themselves in a very delicate situation. The Dutch side currently sit 22nd out of 36 teams with just 8 points. While their chances of reaching the play-offs remain alive, elimination is also looming, as many teams behind them have the same or only 1–2 points fewer. A single slip could see PSV overtaken.
As a result, the only way for PSV to control their own destiny is to defeat Bayern. However, this is clearly no easy task, as Bayern are eager to avoid a second consecutive defeat, even though they have already secured qualification.
In terms of form, both teams have been quite consistent, losing just once in their last eight matches. PSV enjoy home advantage and have been strong there, with only one defeat in their last ten home games. Bayern, meanwhile, have shown great composure away from home, winning eight, drawing one and losing just one recently. Notably, Bayern have won both previous encounters against PSV, suggesting that another victory for the German side is well within reach.
